A hackathon focused on eco-friendly sustainable fishing
Sponsored by U.S. Department of State, GSMA, and /tone
Lend your coding skills to support the conservation of one of our most valuable natural resources.
Fishackathon is a global event of the US State Department that takes place in 15 cities simultaneously. Coders, conservationists, cod'n'chips fans (and designers, scientists and economists) - unite this weekend to develop innovative tech and respond to four big challenges:
Fisheries Management - drawing on science to find ways to protect fishery resources so sustainable explotation is possible.
Conservation - preservation, protection, or restoration of the earth's natural environment, natural ecosystems, vegetation, wildlife, and biodiversity.
Aquaculture - the breeding, rearing, and harvesting of aquatic plants and animals in all types of water environments for food or to enhance recreational, commercial, and ecologically-important species and habitats.
Traceability - ability to verify the history, location, or application of an item by means of a documented recorded identification. In particular, we are concerned with the fact that any product is manufactured or produced under safe working conditions, by workers that earn a fair wage and use methods that do not damage the environment or people.

The winner of the London event will receive a spot on the Pangaea Exploration fisheries related mission to the Ivory Coast, providing an extremely unique opportunity for their winning solution to be tested and used first hand by the expedition crew. Over the next several months the team will work with /Tone and Pangaea Explore to refine their solution through a partner mentoring program, that will provide technical support along with ocean and expedition related expertise. For more trip details: http://panexplore.com/fisheries-cape-verde-to-ivory-coast/. The runner up will receive Apple Gift Cards, sponsored by GSMA.
The winners from each of the 15 global Fishackathon contests will be judged and the overall international winner will receive an expense paid trip to the GSMA Mobile World Congress being held in Barcelona in February of 2016.  In addition, one from the panel of Fishackathon winners will be selected by popular vote for a trip to The Ocean Conference in Santiago, Chile in October 2015.
